The Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1270 ELAINE researches and develops novel, electrically active implants. In particular, implants for the regeneration of bone and cartilage and for deep brain stimulation for the treatment of movement disorders are being researched. The SFB 1270 ELAINE is characterised by interdisciplinarity, as it enables scientists from the fields of electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, mathematics, biology and medicine to work together on a single topic. It has been funded by the German Research Foundation since 07/2017.

The accredited test laboratory HygCen Germany GmbH was founded on 07.03.1996 by Prof. Dr. Heinz-Peter Werner as a center for hygieneand safety for medical devices. In July 2013, it was completely taken over by Dr. med. univ. Sebastian Werner in the second family generation.
HygCen Germany GmbH was recently awarded "Company of the Year 2023 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" in the category "Corporate Development".
The laboratory team grew to 70 employees in the last years. A broad portfolio of quality assurance tests for medical devices and disinfectants for over 650 active clients worldwide is being performed.
The testing services are continuously and broadly expanded. In addition to the tests for human medicine, also the activity of disinfectants for veterinary and institutional applications is tested. This means that fully compliance with EN 14885. The entire pathogen spectrum of bacteria, fungi, mycobacteria, spore-forming pathogens, bacteriophages and viruses is also tested.
In addition to the tests according to EN 14885 other international standards such as ASTM standards are performed on request. Based on decades of experience and the work in European standardization committees in WG1, WG2, WG3 and WG5, standards with individualized application parameters in the sense of a phase 3 field trial can be quickly implemented.
Furthermore, the range of testing services for medical devices has been greatly expanded over the past decades. Currently, reprocessing tests according to EN ISO 17664 and all American reprocessing standards, including FDA compliant, biocompatibility tests according to EN ISO 10993 series of standards without animal testing, including chemical characterization and antimicrobial test methods are being carried out.
The Johner Institut is a reliable partner for the development and authorisation of medical devices as well as for further training on regulatory topics in medical technology. The institute offers comprehensive products and services, e.g. for approval documents, lean QM systems, product testing and post-market surveillance. Free services such as technical articles, classification calculators and training courses provide the necessary knowledge for professional and personal development.
‘MV Gesund vor Ort’ - advice for local authorities
The ‘MV Gesund vor Ort’ project offers a central point of contact to support healthcare provision in rural regions. The project team advises and supports local authorities neutrally and free of charge on open questions, upcoming challenges or specific planning projects relating to outpatient medical care.
The aim is to strengthen healthcare provision in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the long term in view of the many challenges that lie ahead as a result of demographic change.
Regional players in the healthcare economy, municipal decision-makers and those interested in the future of rural healthcare have the opportunity to find out more about this project and network at the 19th National Conference on Health Economy 2024.
ROCINI - Rostock Centre for Interdisciplinary Implant Research
The Rostock Centre for Interdisciplinary Implant Research (ROCINI) was conceived as a virtual centre in 2019. It offers scientists and clinicians from the University of Rostock and Rostock University Medical Centre a platform to work together in the field of implant research in the musculoskeletal and neurological areas. This unique network aims to strengthen Rostock as a centre of research and to translate scientific findings in the field of implant technology.
